● SK chemicals Announces 4G Point Donation Program, Combining Eco-friendliness
and CSR
- The “green points” donated by participants are used to support infrastructure
developmentworldwide.
- The goal this year is to collect 2.6 million points, which are enough to dig 13
“Happiness Wells.”SK chemicals has decided to introduce a new point donation program for employees, which satisfies both the need for eco-friendliness and the awareness for corporate social responsibility (CSR) to do good works.
The new initiative in question is the 4G Point Donation Program that converts employees’ eco-friendly activities into certain numbers of reward points and again converts the accumulated points into certain amounts of money to be donated to infrastructure development projects in developing countries.
The 4G in the program’s name stands for “green,” “global,” “good,” and “giving.” It captures the company’s determination to fulfill its social responsibility and do good works worldwide by encouraging eco-friendly activities and behavior.
The program’s predecessor can be found in the Green Points System that SK chemicals used for a time to encourage employees’ eco-friendly behavior by awarding them certain reward points. SK chemicals adopted the Green Points System in 2010 along with its vision for environmental policy named Green Triple 40. The system offers reward points for activities, such as commuting by bicycle or by walking, by purchasing eco-friendly products, by participating in cleaning up surrounding environments, by attending screenings of films on environment, and by suggesting innovative ideas and solutions for environmental protection.

☞ Green Triple 40: The vision of sustainable management that SK chemicals seeks to realize by 2020 includes the following: involving each and every employee in 40 hours of good work, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 40%, and increasing the sales of eco-friendly products and services by 40%.The 4G Point Donation Program intends to convert the green points that SK chemicals employees have saved into good works for the international community. The company matches the points earned and donated by employees with monetary equivalents and uses the resulting cash on projects, such as digging “Happiness Wells” in African communities, distributing watercones, and spreading solar-energy cookers in developing countries.

☞ SK Happiness WellsSK chemicals has been digging Happiness Wells since 2012 to provide better access to potable water in developing countries. The company has recently completed three wells in Tana Delta and other regions of Africa, thus bringing potable water closer to home for over 3,000 locals.☞ WaterconesA watercone is a device that gathers water in the air and removes its salt content by using solar energy in order to obtain potable water. These devices are especially crucial in hot and poor regions without ready access to potable water. Users place a watercone on a pool of seawater or dirty water. The solar energy distills the water under the watercone. Distilled water is gathered at the bottom of the device.☞Solar Energy CookersA solar energy cooker refers to a device that gathers a consistent amount of sunlight from a specific spot over a period of time so that the heat can be used to cook food. Distributing solar energy cookers in developing countries enables residents to cook food and boil water easily, while reducing pollution and fuel consumption.SK chemicals also plans to encourage its employees to use their green points to purchase eco-friendly products, including Eco Candles, Eco Air Fresheners, recycled goods, and the like.
SK chemicals aims to gather 2.6 million green points this year. This is required to install 13 Happiness Wells, and distribute 1,400 watercones and 1,000 solar energy cookers.
The plan is to encourage voluntary eco-friendly practices and activities among employees so that the company can fulfill its social responsibility and save the environment at the same time.
Director Park Chan-jung, head of the Management Assistance Department, explained, “The 4G Point Donation Program internally encourages employees to become more eco-friendly in their behavior, and externally supports the development of daily living infrastructure in developing countries. SK chemicals will continue to find new and diverse ways to fulfill its social responsibility for the environment and the society.”
The Ulsan plant of SK chemicals has won an award from the Minister of Environment for its active efforts in reducing the emissions of pollutants. SK chemicals has succeeded in developing EcoPlaN, a bio-dissoluble resin, and EcoGen, a bio-plastic made of natural ingredients, such as grains and corns.
