SK chemicals (CEO Lee Moon-suk) and the Silver Theater (CEO Kim Eun-joo) launched the Carnation Film Festival on May 2 at the Silver Theater, located inside the Nagwon Shopping Mall in Jongro-gu, Seoul.
Organized to bring culture and the arts nearer to the home of the “silver” generation, the event also featured the Silver Photo Zone reenacting memorable scenes from classic movies so that visitors can play and take photographs as their favorite movie characters. The 500 or so seniors who visited the Silver Theater that day wore cowboy costumes and school uniforms, reminiscing their younger days.
The event also saw a group of volunteers from SK chemicals standing by and putting carnations on the visitors’ lapels.
All seniors who will visit the theater on Parents’ Day on May 8 will be given baekseolgi, a type of traditional Korean rice pastry. They will also be able to have their photographs taken for free at the Silver Photo Zone.
SK chemicals, which partnered with and has been supporting the Silver Theater since 2009, plans to increase the range of support and assistance it will provide for those belonging to the older generation. A spokesperson for the company explained, “We intend to expand our partnership with the Silver Theater to provide increasing opportunities for seniors to entertain themselves and participate together in social activities.”
The Silver Theater is Korea’s first social enterprise in entertainment that opened its doors in 2009. Visitors aged 55 or older can watch movies at this theater for KRW 2,000 each. Almost 570,000 visitors have visited the theater since its opening.
CEO Kim Eun-joo of the Silver Theater commented, “Thanks to active support from companies like SK chemicals and the increasing participation among seniors, the Silver Theater has established itself as a major venue of culture and entertainment, attracting over 1,000 visitors a day. We have in our plan a variety of special events to inspire and entertain seniors who will visit our theater.”
SK chemicals received a plaque of gratitude from the City of Seoul in 2010 for its contributions to the culture, welfare, and entertainment of those belonging to the older generation.
