Indication(s)·Usage
    • 1. Treat and manage herpes simplex virus skin mucosal tissue infections, including initial and recurrent genital herpes
    • 2. It is effective for herpes zoster virus infections, especially acute pain. But the effect for Post-Herpetic Neuralgia (PHN) has not yet been demonstrated.
    • 3. Treatment of chickenpox in pediatric use ≥ 2 years of age

Dosage and administration

    • Adults
      • 1. Treat herpes simplex virus infection
        • (1) Administer 200 mg of acyclovir 5 times daily at 4- hour intervals, in the case of severe primary infection, treatment can be extended.
        • (2) The dose may be increased to 400 mg or the route of administration may be changed to intravenous injection in patients with severe immune dysfunction (after bone marrow transplantation, etc.) or patients with gastrointestinal malabsorption.
        • (3) It is recommended to administer it as soon as possible after infection, and in the case of recurrence, it is preferred to administer it at the first occurrence of a precursor symptom or lesion.
      • 2. Prophylaxis herpes simplex infection in patients with normal immune function
        • (1) Administer 200 mg 4 times daily at about 6-hour intervals. or administer 400 mg 2 times daily at about 12-hour intervals.
        • (2) After that, the dose may be reduced by 200 mg 2 to 3 times daily after checking its efficacy.
        • (3) In order to confirm the natural course of the disease, patients with long-term treatment should stop treatment periodically every 6 to 12 months.
      • 3. Prophylaxis herpes simplex infection in patients with reduced immune function
        • (1) Administer 200 mg 4 times daily at about 6-hour intervals.
        • (2) In patients with severe immune dysfunction (after bone marrow transplantation, etc.) or patients with gastrointestinal malabsorption, the dose may be increased to 400 mg or the route of administration may be changed by intravenous injection.
        • (3) Administer during the risk of infection.
      • 4. Treat herpes zoster infection
        • (1) This drug is administered 800 mg 5 times daily at about 4-hour intervals except bedtime for 7 days.
        • (2) Intravenous administration should be considered in patients with severe immune dysfunction or gastrointestinal malabsorption.
        • (3) It is recommended to administer it as soon as possible after infection, and the sooner it is treated, the better the effect will be.
    • pediatric use
      • 1. Treat herpes simplex infection and prophylaxis herpes simplex infection in patients with reduced immune function
        • 1) 2 years of age and older: Same as adults.
        • 2) Under 2 years of age: The half of dose in adults is administered.
        • 3) There are no definitive data on the prophylaxis of herpes simplex virus infection in patients with normal immune function.
      • 2. Treat chickenpox in pediatric use 2 years of age and older Administer 20 mg/kg (the maximum daily dose 800 mg) 4 times daily for 5 days.The sooner after the appearance of chickenpox rash, treatment is better, administer preferably within 24 hours after the rash.

      • Patients with renal impairment

        Patients with renal impairment are susceptible to adverse reactions to the psychological and nervous system, so the dose interval adjustment should be made carefully.
        • 1. Treat herpes simplex infection

          The oral dose is usually not higher than the accumulation from intravenous injection. However, in patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than 10 mL/min), 200 mg of this drug is recommended every 12 hours.
        • 2. Treat herpes zoster infection
          • 1) The decreased dose is recommended 800 mg 2 times daily at 12-hour intervals in patients with creatinine clearance less than 10 mL/min.
          • 2) The decreased dose is recommended 800 mg 3 times daily at 8-hour intervals in patients with creatinine clearance 10 to 25 mL/min.
