At the 2017 National Sharing Awards on Oct 19, the Ulsan Plant of SK chemicals (CEO: Kim Cheol) won the Health and Welfare Minister’s Award. The National Sharing Awards is the most prestigious award in the field of sharing and donation hosted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare since 2012.
The heartwarming deeds of the Ulsan Plant (Plant Manager: Hwang Chunhyun) became widely known by Ulsan Welfare, which is the city’s welfare center that recommended the plant as a nominee for the award.
Since 2012, the Ulsan Plant has been providing financial support to 36 children and adolescents in low-income families until they graduate high school through their long-term CSR project “Hope Maker.”
So far, about 200 million won, voluntarily donated by plant employees from their monthly salaries, has been donated to those children. These donations are used to purchase books and school supplies for academic encouragement as well as to acquire certifications.
In 2017, job search and experience events were newly implemented to help the children prepare themselves for the real world. Thanks to such efforts, two sponsored students who graduated high school this year were able to go to college and proceed one step closer to realizing their dreams.
Moreover, the Ulsan Plant has established a sisterhood relationship with Geonam Village and Pyeongdong Village in 2006 to engage in various volunteering activities, which include purchasing agricultural products from the villages, helping them during busy farming seasons, improving community facilities, Gimjang, or making of kimchi, and donating rice. Through these various activities, SK chemicals Ulsan Plant helps about 100 households in farming villages increase their incomes. In 2011, the plant started to sponsor “Gwangmyeongwon,” a short-term care center for the blind. Employees visit the facility 2 or 3 times annually to accompany visually-handicapped people in an outing and help them have a good time. They also provide financial and material support in multiple ways, such as hosting a one-day tea house to raise funds for the center’s relocation, replacing old wardrobes and donating washing machines.
Plant Manager Hwang Chunhyun said, “I’m very happy to receive such a prestigious award for doing our part as a member of this community.” He also added that he will “continue to help people in the community by actively engaging in CSR activities.”
Meanwhile, SK chemicals is currently pursuing enterprise-wide community service activities. The company provides financial support to 160 children in Korea every year through “Hope Maker” and helps them find the right path for their future by hosting various events in each season, including “Hope Campus Tour,” “Countryside Summer Camp,” “Orchard Work Experience” and “Year-End Party for Hope-Maker Children.”
Moreover, SK chemicals has been carrying out Green Classroom Project since 2012 to help around 6,000 children raise their awareness of the importance of environement. The company also launched the Happiness-Sharing Volunteer Group whose members, ranging from the newly-hired to the CEO, engage in volunteering activities at elderly care facilities near their business sites.
