● SK chemicals Releases the First [High Heat-resistant Plastic for Microwave Ovens]
- First application of PCT composite material, which can withstand high temperatures around 260℃, to microwave oven containers
- Increased heat resistance and strength by 20% compared to original materials from Japan
- Uses PCT materials certified by FDA and meets the Federal Food Safety Standards by passing US Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)
SK chemicals has entered the market for high heat-resistant cooking containers with high heat-resistant plastic SKYPURA (PCT, polycyclohexylenedimethylene terephthalate).
On the 28th, SK chemicals (CEO Cheol Kim) has announced that SKYPURA has been developed and applied to ‘Rangemate Pro’, a cooking container for microwave ovens, produced by Pellytech (CEO Jonghyun Kim), a kitchenware specialist company.
Until now, high heat-resistant plastic materials made in Japan have been mainly used in the Korean cooking container market for microwave ovens. This new SK chemicals SKYPURA is 20% stronger against heat and shock compared to the original Japanese materials.
SK chemicals’ SKYPURA is a material approved for food contact containers by US FDA and European EU10/2011 standards. The new cooking containers produced with SKYPURA also meet the food safety standards of Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations* (21 CFR).
According to the industry’s assessment, the SKYPURA will replace most of the existing imported materials with an affordable price, while meeting the global food safety standards. Last year, the size of the market for high heat-resistant plastic for Korean cooking containers was approximately 1,000 tons.
“The Rangemate Pro with SK chemicals’ SKYPURA is expected to be released at the end of this month,” said CEO of Pellytech, Jonghyun Kim. He added, “Consumers already have high interests as the fact that the containers are made from eco-friendly materials became widespread.”
“We have succeeded in producing SKYPURA and entering the high heat-resistant cooking material market, which was dominated by materials produced in Japan,” said Tae Keun Hwang, the head of SK chemicals EP business division. He added, “We will continue on to enter the overseas markets, including the European market, with confidence in our materials.”
SK chemicals’ SKYPURA is a material with a high temperature resistance of 260 ℃ or more and is suitable for the microwave oven cooker ‘Rangemate Pro’. ‘Rangemate Pro’ cooks food by heating the inside of grill pan by turning the microwave oven’s electromagnetic waves into far-infrared rays, without directly using the electromagnetic waves.
Meanwhile, SKYPURA is used for the muffin cups of LK Bakeware Co., Ltd, and is expected to be used for bread pans, cake pans, and bread plates. SK chemicals plans to extend its application to a variety of kitchenware, such as dishware and oven containers through such know-how and case studies.
