On the 31st, SK chemicals announced the launching of Hope Maker School, the company’s youth support program, which has been upgraded for the first time in seven years. It is SK Chemical’s representative CSR program in which the company, together with 15 social welfare institutions in Korea, provides support to 160 children and teenagers.
Since 2012, SK chemicals and its employees have been providing financial assistance to sponsored children by donating a promised amount monthly. SK chemicals’ employees meet children and teenagers regularly and discuss topics that they are interested in and their concerns. The program now includes field trips, summer camps, and year-end events.
In marking the program’s seventh anniversary, it was upgraded to be more interesting and meet the growing needs of today’s youth. The purpose of the program is to provide practical support while encouraging voluntary and active participation of children.
To achieve this goal, SK chemicals surveyed 99 sponsored students to learn those topics elementary, middle and high school students are most interested in.
Based on the results, Hope Maker School was launched to provide tailored programs depending on grade level. P.E. and art classes will be offered to elementary school students to let them have fun and encourage team participation. Middle and high school students will learn to establish their own values and identity, receive career education and engage in mentoring programs to enhance their level of life satisfaction.
“We need to provide more systematic and tailored support to ensure that children become healthy members of society,” said Managing Director Lee Gwangseok who is in charge of SK chemicals’ CSR office. “I hope that Hope Maker School provides children with more practical support by taking their interests and passion into consideration.”
Over the seven-year span, SK chemicals provided support to 220 “Hope Makers,” and as of last year, 50 of them have graduated from high school and are pursuing their dreams; 23 of them are working and the rest entered a university.
With a goal of realizing a sustainable society via “eco-friendly,” “social welfare” and “spreading happiness” strategies, SK chemicals is also focusing on other CSR activities, such as providing and delivering free meals to senior citizens in partnership with 14 local community welfare centers nationwide, environment education at elementary schools and river purification.
