The drill was undertaken as a simulation of casualties due to a fire in the buildings. The fire was first brought under control by the SK chemicals volunteer firefighters who also initiated the evacuation mission, followed by the arrival of 29 firefighters from the fire department in nine fire trucks who put out the fire completely and sent the injured to the hospital.
SK chemicals and the fire department, which had met several times before the drill to discuss roles and responsibilities of each party, focused on minimizing human casualties and property damage by rapidly responding to the disaster in a coordinated manner.
Lee Hong-jae, head of the field response team with the Bundang Fire Department who was also in charge of the entireexercise, said, "Because chemical R&D facilities have large quantities of combustible materials, even a small fire may result in huge damage. It is of utmost necessity to have ongoing safety training so that everyone can respond calmly even when facing a disaster."

SK chemicals has already started highly organized safety training and disaster prevention programs while assigning safety managers in all its production sites in Ulsan, Andong, and Osan, as well as in 'Eco-Lab,' the R&D site, in its headquarters.
