● “Prevent Chickenpox with Vaccination!”
- SK bioscience undertakes chickenpox vaccination campaign
- No. of chickenpox patients rises more than 10,000 this year to date... Vaccination is the best defenseAn event to promote vaccination was held in Seoul as instances of chickenpox, the highly infectious disease caused by the virus affecting mostly infants and toddlers, are rising rapidly.
SK bioscience, the next-generation top vaccine maker, said on February 15 that it organized a campaign for people to get vaccinated against chickenpox on the 14th in Seoul's downtown area.
To raise awareness of the importance of getting vaccinated as the best defense against chickenpox, the event featured a performance in which a mom and child fight the chickenpox virus with a vaccine syringe and a shield.
Currently, the Korean government administers free chickenpox vaccines to babies aged between 12 and 15 months. Although there had been only one kind of chickenpox vaccine available in the country until the first half of last year, SK bioscience introduced a new proprietary vaccine called "SKY Varicella" in September, thus expanding the choice.
According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of the nation's chickenpox patients rose to 96,000 last year, more than doubling from that of 2015. Beginning in January this year, the number is rising even faster, with more than 10,000 by mid-February (12,228 as of February 13).
