- Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to existing petrochemical materials, expansion of supply to domestic and foreign fashion brands
- Strengthened communication by attaching ECOTRION hangtags to products, enhancing understanding of biomaterials
SK chemicals supplies Handsome, which owns domestic and foreign fashion brands, with biomaterials made from corn.
SK chemicals (CEO Ahn Jae-hyun) announced on the 5th that they applied ECOTRION to women's boots of the Handsome's (CEO Kim Min-deok) clothing brands, SYSTEM, SJSJ, and O'2nd.
The eco-friendly leather producer, Kima, applied the ECOTRION material to produce biomaterial-based synthetic leather, which Handsome then utilized to manufacture the boots.
ECOTRION is a bio-based polyol material made by fermenting 100% plant-derived industrial starch. Polyol is mainly used to produce elastic materials like urethane, spandex, and synthetic leather. The material is found in leggings, automotive interiors, bags, sneakers, and other everyday items.
ECOTRION has environmental and physical advantages. The biomaterial in ECOTRION absorbs carbon dioxide as plants grow, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 40% compared to existing petrochemical materials. It also offers superior flexibility due to fewer carbon atoms.
Because of these benefits, ECOTRION has already been applied in products like the Hyundai Genesis and Adidas sneakers and is attracting the attention of companies in global textile and sports goods markets, especially in regions with strong carbon regulations like the EU.
To promote the benefits of the ECOTRION material more actively and enhance the understanding of biomaterials, SK chemicals attached hangtags to the products.
When the QR code on the hangtag is scanned, it leads to an ECOTRION introduction page, providing information on its benefits and applications.
SK chemicals plans to further expand the application of ECOTRION in the future, starting with the cooperation with Handsome, and actively promote the benefits of biomaterials by attaching hangtags.
Mr. Kim Eung-soo, head of the Green Material Business at SK chemicals, said, "ECOTRION is one of the materials gaining attention due to the global trend of carbon reduction and sustainable production." He added, "We will continue to expand its applications into premium product lines such as clothing, sports goods, and automotive interiors based on its excellent physical characteristics."
