- Collaborates with global cosmetic packaging company Toly to create a container made with up to 70% circular recycled material
- Showcases cosmetic containers made with recycled materials at LUXE PACK Monaco
SK chemicals is advancing cosmetic container recyclability in partnership with a global cosmetic packaging company.
SK chemicals (CEO & President: Ahn Jae-hyun) announced on [date] that it showcased cosmetic containers made with increased circular recycled materials in collaboration with the global cosmetic packaging company TOLY at LUXE PACK Monaco 2024. The successful event concluded on October 2nd in Monaco, France.
TOLY, headquartered in Malta, Europe, is a global cosmetic packaging specialist supplying product containers for luxury cosmetic brands across Europe, North America, and Asia.
The newly unveiled cosmetic container is a compact case made with SK chemicals' ECOTRIA CLARO material. After developing a product with 50% recycled material content last year, SK chemicals has increased the recycled content to 70% this year.
ECOTRIA is a brand name for high-performance copolyesters containing recycled raw materials, while CLARO refers to copolyesters that can be classified and recycled as PET after use. The company explains that the newly introduced ECOTRIA CLARO is the ideal material for recycling and establishing a complete circular system (Closed Loop) for plastics, as it is made from waste plastics and can be recycled into raw materials for plastics again after being used.
ECOTRIA CLARO utilizes depolymerization-based circular recycling technology to break down waste plastics on a molecular level for raw material recycling, instead of physical recycling methods that crush and reprocess waste plastics. This allows the recycled material to achieve the same properties as petroleum-based materials, including transparency, processability, heat resistance, and chemical resistance. The company stated that with this advanced technology, they are able to uphold the same quality as current materials when using up to 70% recycled content.
Kim Eung-soo, the Head of Green Materials Business at SK chemicals, said, "Despite the market preconception that using a higher recycled content may lead to lower quality, we believe that the performance of the cosmetic containers made with circular recycled materials developed with TOLY clearly addresses these concerns." He added, "Moving forward, we plan to increase the use of recycled materials in different industries and establish a sustainable circular recycling ecosystem through collaboration with brand owners, leveraging our wide range of sustainable material solutions."
