SK chemicals (President Kim Cheol) and SK Gas (President Kim Jeong-keun) have jointly held a community service event for children in low-income families in the Seongnam area.
The two companies hosted their "Hope Maker" year-end event for underprivileged children and adolescents at the SK chemicals Eco Lab and the company complex on Dec. 9. About 120 company staff members attended the event, which was made of two parts: production of "winter warmup kits" and a year-end party.
The Hope Maker is a community service project administered by the two companies. Through one-on-one matching, company executives and staff members support low-income children and adolescents until they reach adulthood. Since 2012, about 250 children and adolescents in the Seongnam area have benefited from the program.
The first part dedicated to the production of "winter warmup kits" started at 2 p.m. It was attended by actresses Im Ye-jin and Jeong Han-bi as well as 60 other participants from the two companies.
The boxes prepared by the participants were filled with winter supplies, including blankets, gloves, thermo bottles and thermo pouches, plus handwritten letters for the Hope Maker-sponsored children. In all, 450 such box kits were made to be delivered to the children/adolescents and other low-income residents in the Seongnam area.
"I am very happy to have this opportunity to join in a community service program for children," Ms. Im said. "I hope that the kits I have made with SK members will help the children stay warm through the cold winter."
Beginning at 5 p.m., the year-end party for the Hope Maker-sponsored children, titled "2016, Get Hopes Up and Go for Happiness," was held at the Grium Hall within the Eco Lab.
The party was attended by about 200 persons, including 60 SK chemicals and SK Gas members, 120 Hope Maker-sponsored children and their family members, and welfare officials.
During the party, a variety of programs such as games and comedy performances were carried out, drawing enthusiastic response from the children. The children expressed their gratitude to their supporters by showing fusion-style samulnori and guitar performances they had prepared for six months.
"We are preparing for this event every year, hoping that the Hope Maker-sponsored children and adolescents can stay warm through the winter," said Lee Gwang-seok, head of the SK chemicals Public Relations Division, after attending the year-end event. "To ensure the sharing of happiness with the local community, we will continue to implement various activities designed to further promote communications between corporate staff members and the Hope Maker beneficiaries."
SK chemicals systematically operates season-specific support programs for the Hope Maker-sponsored students. In spring, there is a "campus tour" program that offers career counseling for students. The representative program for summer is a "visit to granny`s" project designed to help promote the emotional development of urban students through visits to rural communities. There are rural community volunteer service programs during the fall season, and ski camps in winter. SK chemicals intends to continue to strengthen the physical and human resources support for marginalized children and adolescents in the local community.
