● SK chemicals, “Carbon-based composite materials to accelerate entry into the automotive market”

SK chemicals is entering the automotive market with carbon composite materials.

SK chemicals (CEO Mr. Chul Kim) announced that they will participate in ＇JEC Asia 2018 International Composites Event＇ (called JEC Asia 2018) which will be held at COEX in Samseong-dong, Seoul from 14th to 16th.

At JEC Asia 2018, Asia＇s largest composite material exhibition, SK chemicals will showcase its accumulated materials technology aimed at the automotive parts market with the introduction of "prepreg compression molding (PCM).”

When a general prepreg is molded into parts, it takes 1 hour or more to harden. However, SK chemicals fast-curing prepreg compression molding has the advantage of reducing the curing speed to less than 3 minutes. Industries getting this news say that it would be suitable for automotive parts production process that requires ‘mass production’ while meeting the ＇vehicle weight reduction＇ which is the topic of the automotive industry.

SK chemicals has developed a wide range of automotive parts along with domestic and overseas automakers and parts companies with prepreg compression molding. In this event, they will show automobile door, radiator grill, rear skid, roof rail, leaf spring, propeller shaft, and diffuser, highlighting the vehicle parts to which SK prepreg have been applied.

This time, the automobile parts introduced by SK chemicals are being applied to some mass-produced vehicles rather than concept cars, so domestic and foreign participating exhibitors expecting actual application are expected to show keen interest. Especially, the car door is applied to the luxury electric sports car Qiantu K50, and the radiator grill and rear skid are also supplied as customizing parts for the domestic large sedan market recently.

In addition to materials for automobiles, materials for wind power generation are also exhibited.

Distribution of large blades of 60m or longer has been increasing in the global wind power market. As a result, lightweight materials such as carbon composite materials that can reduce the weight of blades themselves are in the spotlight.

SK chemicals is supplying the prepregs which acquired certification for wind power generation material from DNV-GL, a world-famous certification organization, for large wind power structures. The prepregs spar caps exhibiting this time are also being supplied to wind generator blades under construction in an offshore wind energy complex in the Southwest Sea.

JEC Asia 2018, hosted by the JEC Group, is the largest composite material exhibition in Asia. It has been held annually in Singapore since 2008, but moved to Korea last year. About 250 exhibitors from 40 countries including Europe, America, and Asia will participate in the exhibition.

- Prepreg refers to carbon fiber reinforced composite material in the form of a sheet in which resin and carbon fibers are mixed (combined) at a certain ratio. The carbon fiber composite material has a strength of about 10 times of iron with the ¼ of the weight. Recently, global automakers are applying various carbon composite parts to automobiles for better fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emission.
- Roof rail: A skeleton that forms the ceiling of a vehicle as a car material that consists body in white (BIW).
- Leaf Spring:A shock absorbing device of a car made by overlapping plates of different lengths.
- Propeller shaft:A long shaft that transfers the power of engine from transmission to the differential gear at the rear of the vehicle in the real wheel drive (RWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD).
- Diffuser:An external component that quickly draws passing air back into the lower part of the body of a car to reduce air resistance and is also known as rear bumper diffuser.
