SK chemicals announced on April 19th that it would develop and distribute Korea’s first environment-friendly antioxidant (corrosion inhibition) designed for application in the water supply pipes of large residential complexes.
As a result, SK chemicals has recently begun final construction on a 5,000 ton-scale line for mass production of the antioxidant ‘Drinking Water Treatment (DTC)’ at its Suwon-plant, and will launch full-fledged production from June. DTC is a water treatment chemical used to inhibit the corrosion of water supply and distribution pipes. The DTC supplied by SK chemicals is registered by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) in the U.S.
DTC can secure human health by preventing drinking water pipes from releasing heavy metals. It enhances corrosion inhibition capability and guarantees safety and the longer life-span of facilities. DTC is most useful in managing the water supply pipes within large residential complexes. “Given that some 47 million people each use 175ℓ/day, the size of the DTC market is approximately 60 billion won per year and, in case of apartment complexes, it amounts to 30 billion won,” said Chang-mook Cho, team leader of SK chemicals.
SK chemicals plans to produce 850 tons of DTC this year and achieve the break-even point next year, before registering 10 billion won of revenue in 2006. The company is also considering a large-scale sale project involving exports to the Southeast Asia including China, and an advance into the domestic water treatment plant market in the near future.
